Lupe Flores

Lupe knew she wanted to help people when she started at Bradley University as a nursing major. She switched to studying psychology with a minor in health services, and today she is supporting students as they explore what they will be.

"I am extremely thankful for the guidance I had in the Give Something Back Scholarship Foundation and my high school counselor," she says. "They showed me that college is possible."

Hailing from the southwestern suburbs of Chicago, Lupe now calls the DeKalb community her home.

"I was drawn to NIU by the tremendous support that NIU has for students," she says. "I get excited about it because not only does NIU pride itself on the diversity of the campus, but also NIU is doing a lot to create resources for students. If you don't find exactly what they are looking for, we can work along with you to create such opportunity."

Being a first-generation college student, financial aid and scholarship recipient influenced her to reach out to others through a role with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Her favorite part of being a higher education professional remains empowering students.

"My advice to anyone in their journey to college is to always remember you belong and believe in yourself," she says. "You deserve what you have worked hard for, and I believe it is really important for students to know that."
