Admission Counselor Stephanie Cardenas is a proud NIU alum whose professional journey is rooted in a commitment to student support and access to higher education. Originally from Cicero and Berwyn, Illinois, Stephanie now resides in Rochelle and brings both experience and professional passion to her role.
Stephanie began her college journey as an undecided student, driven by a strong desire to work with people but unsure of the exact path to follow. As a first-generation college student, she explored multiple interests—including child development, teaching, marriage and family therapy, and social services—before earning her bachelor’s degree in human development and family sciences from NIU. Her ability to explore, adapt, and grow during college deeply shaped her perspective and fuels the guidance she now offers students navigating similar questions.
As an admissions counselor, Stephanie finds meaning in every conversation with prospective students. “I enjoy learning about their goals and easing the uncertainties of the college search process,” she says. “And I want to help them take confident steps toward their future.” She attributes much of her growth and opportunity to the university’s welcoming campus community and supportive environment, which inspired her to return and give back.
Stephanie encourages students to step outside their comfort zones, take advantage of campus resources, and remember that college is a place for discovery—not perfection. “You’re here to learn about yourself and discover your interest,” she says.
