Returning to NIU After Academic Dismissal

If you were dismissed from NIU for academic reasons, you have the opportunity to return and finish your degree. Many students successfully restart their education after taking time away from campus.

Am I Eligible to Apply?

You can only apply for reinstatement if:

  • You were dismissed from NIU for academic reasons
  • You've been away from NIU for at least one full semester (fall or spring)

Note: If you meet the criteria for Academic Recovery, you may have a simpler path back. Check if Academic Recovery applies to you.

How our Review Process Works

Your application will be reviewed by the college that houses your intended major, not by a central admissions committee. This means the faculty and staff who understand your field of study will evaluate your readiness to return.

Important: Even after being away for a semester, reinstatement is not automatic. Each case is individually reviewed based on your specific circumstances and preparation.

How to Apply

Apply online

After you apply, you'll receive an email with instructions and a link requesting your responses to our online reinstatement questionnaire. Not every student needs to complete this step, but most do. You'll see "petition letter" on your MyNIU checklist if this applies to you.

What will you be asked?

Your college wants to understand what's changed since you left NIU. These questions help reviewers see your growth and readiness to return. Most students find it helpful to create a draft before submitting their responses.

Describe experiences or activities since you were a student at NIU and explain how they have prepared you to return.

This question focuses on skills you developed through work, volunteering, additional coursework, or life experiences. Write about specific qualities that helped you succeed and how they'll help you at NIU.

Strong answers include:

  • Specific examples of responsibility, time management, or problem-solving
  • Skills gained through employment, volunteer work, or other education
  • Personal growth moments that changed your approach to challenges
  • How these experiences relate to academic success
What factors impacted your past academic performance? What lessons did you learn?

Be honest about challenges you faced, both personal and academic. Reviewers want to see self-awareness and growth, not excuses.

Strong answers include:

  • Specific obstacles that affected your studies (health, family, financial, personal)
  • What you learned about yourself and your study habits
  • How you've addressed or plan to address these challenges
  • Evidence that you understand what went wrong
What are your plans for academic success if you return?

Describe your support system and specific strategies you'll use. This shows reviewers you have a realistic plan, not just good intentions.

Strong answers include:

  • Specific campus resources you'll use (tutoring, counseling, academic coaching)
  • Personal support network (family, friends, mentors)
  • Time management and study strategies you've developed
  • How you'll balance school with work or family responsibilities

Campus resources to mention:

What do you plan to study and what courses would you take?

This question shows your persistence, planning ability, and commitment to your degree. Research your major requirements before answering.

Strong answers include:

  • Your intended major and why you chose it
  • Specific courses you plan to take in your first semester back
  • How your experiences since leaving NIU connect to your academic goals
  • Realistic timeline for completing your degree
  • What you plan to do with your degree after graduation
Is there anything else you want to share that might help us review your application?

This is your opportunity to share information not covered elsewhere. Use this space thoughtfully - only include relevant details that strengthen your case.

Consider including:

  • Extenuating circumstances that affected your previous performance
  • Significant life changes since leaving NIU
  • Additional evidence of your readiness to return
  • Reasons for extended time away from school

If you are granted reinstatement

Your record stays the same. Reinstatement doesn't erase your previous dismissal from your transcript.

Financial aid isn't guaranteed. You may need to appeal separately to restore financial aid eligibility. Learn about Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Clear any holds first. You can't register for classes until you resolve any outstanding issues with offices like the Bursar or Health Services.

Meet with your advisor immediately. Find your advisor and schedule an appointment before registration opens.

Use campus resources. The Huskie Academic Success Center offers tutoring, writing support, and academic coaching to help you succeed.

Writing Strong Answers

Be specific and honest. Vague answers don't help your case. Instead of "I'll study harder," explain exactly what strategies you'll use.

Show self-awareness. Acknowledge what went wrong before and demonstrate you understand why.

Highlight your support system. Name specific people, services, or resources you'll rely on.

Research your major. Show you understand what success in your program requires.

Consider timing. If you're still dealing with issues like health problems, financial stress or family challenges, it might be better to wait until you can fully focus on school.
