Announcements

  • Illinois MAP grant recipients: FAFSA priority deadline is Thursday, April 23. If you may be eligible for the Illinois MAP Grant, April 23 is the last day to submit your FAFSA or Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid and be considered for a 2026-27 MAP award. Applications received after that date will be placed in suspense status and you should not count on receiving a MAP grant.

  • FAFSA priority deadline: April 25. A federal system update on April 26 will delay processing of FAFSA records submitted on or after that date. If you miss this priority deadline, you may not receive a financial aid offer until July. Submit your 2026-27 FAFSA now at studentaid.gov (NIU school code: 001737). Questions? Contact finaid@niu.edu or call 815-753-1395.

  • Decision Day is May 1. Confirm your enrollment and let everyone know you're #NIUBound. Share your decision!

  • Parents and families: Stay up to date with the NIU Admitted Families Newsletter for timely information, important deadlines and tips to help your student make a successful transition to NIU. Subscribe to our Admitted Families Newsletter.

NIU has several residence halls to fit different lifestyles and budgets. Patterson Complex is the most popular option, featuring cluster-style living with minisuites where you share a restroom with just one other roommate. Grant and Stevenson towers offer modern 12-story living with OneCard door access. Neptune Hall is conveniently located near the Holmes Student Center and is known for its fireplace lounge. Use the compare tool to review room types, rates and amenities side by side.

To prepare, complete any required placement exams, submit official transcripts and download Microsoft Teams before your appointment. If you need to reschedule, log back in to your Next Steps portal.
