Will I Get Into NIU if I Attend a Community College?

Easily transfer into more than 60 NIU undergraduate degree programs

Great news - if you currently attend a participating community college, the Guaranteed Admission Program makes it possible for you to be admitted to NIU.

As a participant in the Guaranteed Admission Program, you’ll be eligible for NIU scholarships. You can also apply to the University Honors program, if you meet GPA requirements.

How to Participate

Fill out the Guaranteed Admission Program Participation Form at least one year before your first semester at NIU. This form allows NIU and your community college to share information. It also enables you to take advantage of the reverse transfer process.

You should continue to work with advisors at your community college to track your progress toward your degree. NIU advisors will also help you track your degree progress and assist with the transfer process.

Requirements

To participate in the Guaranteed Admission Program, you must:

  • Be a high school graduate.
  • Be in good standing at your community college.
  • Have completed a minimum of 24 transferable credit hours.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.00 (out of 4.00) at all colleges/universities attended.
  • Complete required general education coursework. Courses numbered lower than 100-level and courses not deemed transferable are not included in this agreement.

International Students

If you’re in the U.S. on a nonimmigrant visa, you must meet our English proficiency requirement. You can do this by completing ENG 121 and either ENG 122 or ENG 126 with grades of C or higher. If you do so, you won’t need to submit additional proof of English proficiency when you apply.

Limited Admission Programs

If you want to enroll in a limited admission program, you’ll need to meet additional requirements. These requirements can include specific coursework or a higher minimum GPA. You may be classified as a pre-major until you meet these requirements.
